Summer 2011: Greece

June or July, 2011 - (final dates to be posted soon)

Professor Todd Brenningmeyer - Group Leader

Archeological Field Work in Greece

Students (both majors and non-majors) will accompany Professor Brenningmeyer on one of two exciting field experiences this next summer.  Choose: (1) the region of Eleia where you will survey Frankish citadels and architectural ruins located in the mountains of the western Peloponnese (some sites have only been visited by shepherds and a handful of explorers); or (2) the island of Karpathos where we will begin the first non-Greek investigation in decades: a survey of a Byzantine harbor town.

Site 1: Eleia

A comprehensive survey of Frankish citadels and architecture in the region of Eleia.  Students will undertake mapping of extant architectural remains at several archaeological sites.  Students will use digital technologies for archaeological investigations (such as GPS, GIS, and remote sensing applications) and will gain an appreciation of the architecture of Frankish, Byzantine and pre-modern periods.  Accommodations: may include camping.  Maryville academic credit: 3 hrs.  Cost is about $4,500.

Site 2: Karpathos

A survey of the Byzantine site at Leukos on the island of Karpathos, a harbor town during the early Christian and Byzantine periods.  A comprehensive survey of pottery sherds and topographic and architectural surveys of the region.  Accommodations: seaside apartments 3+ persons to a room.  Maryville academic credit: 3hrs.  Cost is about $4,500.
