Maryville University Reaches Out to Haiti

Dr. Chuck Gulas in Haiti

Maryville University has initiated a fundraising drive in honor of Charles Gulas, PhD, dean of Maryville University's School of Health Professions, who was on sabbatical at Hôpital Albert Schweitzer (HAS) in Deschappelles, Haiti, when the devastating earthquake struck on Jan. 12. He is still there, assisting in relief efforts.

"Our hearts go out to the people of Haiti," said Mark Lombardi, president of Maryville University. "We are very proud of our community for its generous support, particularly Chuck Gulas, who has shown us all a pure, giving spirit."

HAS is one of few fully-functional hospitals located within 100 miles of Port-Au-Prince. The hospital is treating large numbers of earthquake victims and is running desperately low on medical supplies. Constructed in 1956, the HAS facility is overwhelmed; normally the hospital provides 80 beds, but more than 500 injured people are receiving care at one time.

Maryville Reaches Out For HaitiIn an effort to raise awareness and funds, the Maryville University community is supporting the Friends of HAS, an organization located in Pittsburgh. The Maryville Reaches Out to Haiti effort began with a collection of $350 during the annual Mania Night basketball games. Additionally, Maryville University Athletics will donate a portion of the gate from the game.

University employees, students and alumni may donate to Maryville Reaches Out to Haiti in a variety of different ways: Online via credit card, Payroll Deduction, cash and check. Cash and check donations may be made at the Student Service Center, located in Gander Hall. All monies collected will be delivered directly to Friends of HAS to support the hospital's relief efforts.

Gulas, who is working with Health Volunteers Overseas, is continuing with his sabbatical work, while helping hospital staff manage patient care and treat those injured in the earthquake. Working in the Rehabilitation Aide Training Program at Hôpital Albert Schweitzer, Gulas teaches physical therapy skills to local health care providers. He regularly updates a blog about his work at HAS: drgulas.com.
