In medieval England it was fashionable for people of wealth or importance to have brass plaques engraved in their memory. The portraits were secured to the walls and floors of local churches, and often served as tombstones. These memorials were made between 1280 and 1650 A.D., and their pictures accurately depict more than 350 years of England's history.
The London Brass Rubbing Workshops provides more than 30 replica "brasses" for a unique classroom experience. Students learn about the history of the plaques and view a short DVD on how to make a brass rubbing. Next, everyone completes their own rubbing, choosing from a selection of knights, lords, ladies, kings and animals of the time period. All materials are supplied, including the special cotton rag paper and metallic beeswax crayons.
The cost is only $5.50 per person for instruction and materials (minimum of 30 students); groups over 60 have a reduced cost of $5.00 per person.
